The TWC voting incentive for Planes of Eldlor has updated: Goblin sketches

I was asked about how the look of some of our more unique creatures came about... goblins in particular. Oddly enough, they're probably one of the worst examples.

A few years ago was the first time I had sketched a concept for an Eldlorian goblin, which at the time was a fairly standard looking creature. It wasn't until much later, when they were soon to appear in the story, that it occurred to me to play with the concept a bit further. I had actually scribbled one quick note to myself on the side of one of the script pages, "rat monkey lizards".

The two blue sketches were the only concept drawings I had done of the new design, unless you want to count the chicken-scratch-scribbles I was doing in the margins of my notebook at work. (Trust me, you don't want to count those.) The rat monkey lizard... er... wallaby... goblin things practically sprang to life at that point, and I was so pleased with the concept that I snuck them into the background of an earlier page, as many of our sharp-eyed readers caught.

The TWC voting incentive for Planes of Eldlor has updated: Spiny Desert Drake

Ooh, look who's finished now! You guys are the first to get to see this lovely little fellow completed.

The Spiny Desert Drake is going to be an exclusive print for Phoenix Comicon this year, 11" x 17", signed and numbered, and limited to 100 copies.

He's also part of the same series as the Orange Blossom drakeling you saw the inks of last week. The idea is, when we go to a convention and do an exclusive piece of artwork, it will feature the types of dragons that are native to the area. It's a fun way to get a bit creative with "real" dragon species, and do something that fits nicely with each convention as well. The TWC voting incentive for Planes of Eldlor has updated: Orange Blossom - Inks

Here's a tiny little drakeling, a shy tree dweller. Specifically, he likes orange orchards, enjoying the taste of sweet citrus and nectar.

He's actually the first in a series I'm doing for convention exclusives, featuring the draconic wildlife that can be found in the vicinity of the convention. Since WonderCon is being held in Anaheim this year, I chose to go back in time a bit to when the orange orchards dominated the area. Don't worry, though, these little fellows have found plenty of other orchards and citrus trees to inhabit, even though the big Anaheim orchards are no more. :)

Incidentally, you've already seen the lineart of another of the dragons in this series; the drake perched on the cactus arm is set to be our exclusive print for Phoenix Comicon this year. The TWC voting incentive for Planes of Eldlor has updated: ACEO Fantasy Set 1

Thank you for all of the suggestions about different fantasy creatures to feature in the incentives! This week, you can see the first nine ACEO cards I've been sketching on. As a few of the creatures coincided with your suggestions, I figured it'd be fun to show them off a bit.

In case you don't know, ACEOs are "Art Cards, Editions and Originals" - tiny little collectible works of art. The only rule is that they have to be exactly 2.5" by 3.5", but can otherwise be any medium. Neat idea!

From the top left, there's a griffon, a centaur, Medusa, a manticore, a winged horse, Sukozu, an alyei (demon horse), an ouroboros, and another dragon. I liked the image of the weeping Medusa so much that I turned that one into a full print! The TWC voting incentive for Planes of Eldlor has updated: The Tracker - Colored!

Whew. I'm very pleased with the amount of artwork I was able to concentrate on over the break! Such things make me happy.

For the first incentive of the new year, here's the colored version of the werewolf from last week. As I mentioned, it'd been a while since I drew this one. I'm glad I revisited it and took it all the way to a finished, colored piece.

Any werewolf fans out there? They've got some tacky-as-heck movies, and some fabulous (while still occasionally tacky) movies as well. Let's see... my favorites are Dog Soldiers, the Underworld series (especially Rise of the Lycans), An American Werewolf in London, and the Ginger Snaps series.
