This is the artwork for my exclusive print for Phoenix Comicon 2016. We’ve had a brand new, exclusive piece of artwork available for this show each year since we first vended there in 2011.
When you want to proudly proclaim your allegiance to those grandest of scaled, fire-breathing beasts, here’s a button design just for you. It features a spiky black dragon spreading brown, leathery wings across a sea of flame, and the bold words, “I AM a DRAGON” across the front.
I designed this new phoenix originally for doing a silk painting project. While that didn’t completely work out, I loved how the design turned out and decided to use it for other things. The round shape naturally made it an excellent candidate for adding to my collection of buttons!
This was the first time we ever did an exclusive for a convention, for Phoenix Comicon 2011. The prints were 11″ x 17″ and turned out beautifully! We made exactly 100 copies, all signed and hand-numbered. They were quite successful at the show!
The duality depicted by a phoenix and a dragon is most often seen in Asian artwork – the yin and yang, masculinity and femininity, light and dark. I really love the concept, but wanted to put my own spin on the art and use a western-style dragon and my own style of phoenix. The slightly muted color scheme gives it a slightly more antique feel, as well.
This is a pattern of dragons created as a tessellation. A tessellation is a pattern repeated in such a way that there’s no space left in-between. Think M.C. Escher with his fish, birds, lizards, and such…
Dragons, though? Well, I do like a challenge!
Credit goes to Tessellations.org for instructions on creating complex patterns like this!
